Rhodonite contains up to 48% manganese, making it an important ore of this element. It is opaque, ranging in colour from soft pink, through to red-pink and can display distinctive brown or black markings, occasionally a yellow or green tinge can be seen, this indicates the presents of iron. It belongs to the silicate group of minerals and forms according to the triclinic crystal system, it has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale

Rhodonite is named from Greek, meaning rose. Although it was not listed as a distinct mineralogical species until 1819, its has been recognised as a foundation stone since ancient times. Thought to have a stabilising affect on the emotional nature, it acts as a security stone and will provide a solid base in the physical world, from which to explore the spiritual realms.
